The HIV&AIDS pandemic has become a major crisis that threatens human development and welfare in many parts of our country. Poverty, unemployment, lack of access to quality and affordable social and health services, gender inequality, retrogressive cultural practices and other human rights violations all conspire to increase vulnerability to HIV&AIDS.
Many a times however, we think of HIV&AIDS and human rights in isolation when in the real sense the two are closely interrelated and mutually interdependent. HIV&AIDS is usually emblematic and in most cases indicative of the existence of human rights violations. It is only through the protection, promotion and respect of human rights that those infected and affected by the disease can live a life of dignity and worth in society and generally make our efforts in prevention and control of the epidemic successful.
Human rights address the needs of AIDS care by protecting the human rights of those infected and made vulnerable by HIV&AIDS prevention and working on the factors that lead towards HIV transmission.
