Will I go for HIV test or not? If the result is positive where will I go and how will life be? Will my family members and friends isolate me? Will I loose my job?” These are some of the many questions which people ask concerning HIV/AIDS to express the fear attached to it.
The cause for it is attached to the HIV/AIDS related stigma and discrimination. These two are evident in all areas of human interaction including in workplace, health institutions, family and community level, and academic institutions among others.
How then can stigma and discrimination be challenged? There is need to advocate for strong national and global leadership in reduction of HIV/AIDS related stigma and discrimination, work to protect human rights of PLWAS, promote the greater involvement of People Living With HIV/AIDS and promote voluntary counselling and testing among others.
Finally, the reduction and the final elimination of stigma is not the governments, NGOs or CBOs responsibility but a collective responsibility for all citizens of this country. If you are not infected, you are affected.
